The Plague 11/20/20
After reading part two of The Plague, the beginning part struck most accord with me because the reaction that the people of Oran had when the gates closed reminds me when the world first went into quarantine back in march. Thinking back to it, it was a weird experience because at the time I was at Central High School and I remember when the school sent out an email that schools would be shut down for a week. Then, we went into online learning which was only supposed to last until the end of the school year. Now, we are all the up to January 2021 where schools may not even re-open until next school year and that's not even confirmed yet. I think that when COVID-19 came back in late 2019, no one really had taken much notice to it or took it serious similarly to when in The Plague, they truly felt the epidemic when the gates closed or in our case, when we went into quarantine.
What is the reaction of the characters in The Plague when the gates shut? On page 67, the narrator says 'But once the town gates were shut, every one of us realized that all, the narrator included, were, so to speak, in the same boat, and each would have to adapt himself to the new conditions of life.' This quote really hits home because when quarantine first began is when I realized that things really weren't the same anymore. To be honest though, in terms of lifestyle, although it was a big adjustment, it wasn't the worst thing for me personally. A lot of people wanted 2020 year to end because it was so 'terrible' but honestly, 2020 was still a pretty good year for me. But, quarantine first began, I knew it was real when everything that went into place happened. I also knew that COVID was real when I heard of 'celebrities' getting COVID because it showed that all that fame and money and whatnot meant nothing because they're still human. Another quote that stuck out to me was on page 67 also and it's when the narrator says 'One of the most striking consequences of the closing of the gates was, in fact, this sudden deprivation befalling people who were completely unprepared for it.' This quote sticks out to me because I feel like a lot of people did go into this pandemic unprepared. Although, this issue has more to do with managing finances and always being prepared. But, since a lot of people haven't learned that concept, they had to go into COVID broke because the government deemed there job as worthless or because business owners went out of business.
In conclusion, the general public's reaction to COVID is similar to The Plague when the gates shut down. In both instances, you see people going into pandemics unprepared and now have to live a life depending on the government. In both instances, what I take away is that you should always be prepared in every aspect including finances so what when it rains, you have an umbrella for protection (metaphorically speaking).
