The Plague 11/20/20

After reading part two of The Plague , the beginning part struck most accord with me because the reaction that the people of Oran had when the gates closed reminds me when the world first went into quarantine back in march. Thinking back to it, it was a weird experience because at the time I was at Central High School and I remember when the school sent out an email that schools would be shut down for a week. Then, we went into online learning which was only supposed to last until the end of the school year. Now, we are all the up to January 2021 where schools may not even re-open until next school year and that's not even confirmed yet. I think that when COVID-19 came back in late 2019, no one really had taken much notice to it or took it serious similarly to when in The Plague , they truly felt the epidemic when the gates closed or in our case, when we went into quarantine.     What is the reaction of the characters in The Plague  when the gates shut...

The Plague 11/6/20

A plague is defined as a disastrous evil or affliction; calamity. Before starting this book, I didn't know what to expect. One can actually figure out what the this book is going to be about without even reading about it. The Plague  is about a plague that sweeps through the city Oran. The Plague reminds me of what's going on the world with COVID-19. Although COVID-19 isn't nearly as deadly as the plague in the book and there are politics and controversy around it, both COVID-19 and the plague in the book both have similar ways of how both began.     I remember when COVID-19 first began. I had actually heard about it in late 2019 and early 2020, but I didn't think that we were going to end up where we are today. In fact, I thought that COVID-19 was going to be like Ebola. I thought that it was going to be in the news for a little bit and then just die out. I did not think that COVID-19 was going to be a historical event where America would fall apart a...

The Sun Also Rises Review 10/16/20

What do I think about the book The Sun Also Rises  so far? I think that the book is alright overall and as the reader, I can infer and take away many different things from looking at the relationship between the narrator Jake Barnes and his friend Robert Cohn. Looking at the those two characters relationship, I can see certain themes in the book like for instance what it means to be a man from the perspective of the book. In previous class discussions I've had, we've talked about toxic masculinity in the book which seems to be a popular idea from the book. In this review, we'll look the relationship between Jake Barnes and Robert Cohn and whether there relationship implies ideas of toxic masculinity.     So what is the relationship between Robert Cohn and Jake Barnes? In the book, Jake Barnes is the narrator of the story and he opens the book up by talking about his friend Robert Cohn. From the tone of the book, one could infer that Jake Barnes does no...

The Mezzanine Review 9/3/20

Does the escalator ride and getting new shoe strings give the reader a concrete view into Howie's mindset and way of thinking? From reading the book, the events and stories that Howie tells on his journey into the mezzanine does give the reader insight to how the mind of Howie operates.      So who is Howie? Howie is the main of the book and the plot of the book revolves around him. He's a pretty typical man who works a typical nine to five in the office. From the context of the book, he probably works in some sort of big corporation and is starting at an entry-level position given the fact that he's in his mid-twenties. His co-workers around him like Tina are pretty average people themselves and he doesn't really think much of them. He lives a pretty automated and routinely life where he does things out of habit and doesn't give much thought to it. As the reader, you only get some insight of him as he is taking an escalator to his job. During this es...
